The well-defined objective of the English Department at MJCET truly echoes the vision of the institution which emphasises on creating ‘high calibre, ethical and socially responsible engineers’. The department underscores the importance of language skills viz. listening, speaking, reading and writing in all aspects of life to promote understanding, foster meaningful communication, and ensure career growth. Thus, it constantly strives to bring a holistic development in engineering students with regard to their communication needs in personal and professional realm.
The Department can boast of its four well qualified, experienced doctorate faculty whose research areas vary from English literature, ELT, ICT, Translation, Women’s Studies, Emerging Trends in English Language Teaching to name a few. The faculty consistently strives for professional development by engaging in quality research, attending and conducting seminars, presenting and publishing papers in reputed national and international journals.
The need of students' communication skills is catered through its well-equipped English language laboratories. While the CALL Lab provides full-fledged computer-assisted language learning, in which students gain a thorough understanding of phonetics and received pronunciation, the interactive multi-media labs allow students to develop an array of skills through various activities such as public speaking, group discussion, debate and paper presentation. Students learn to express themselves assertively, to value ideas other than their own, and to work together to reach a greater goal. Overall, the department through its well-designed interactive tasks prepare students to meet the requirement of technical and professional communication in the domain of academic, industry, business, public and private organizations.
Other than general English, the department is actively involved in teaching subjects such as Effective Technical Communication, Soft skills and Interpersonal skills, Human Values and Professional Ethics and Gender Sensitization.
The Department ensures that the English language learning process is enriched through well-designed assignment topics, regular quiz sessions, and use of interactive multimedia in the classroom along with formative and summative evaluations, seminars and guest lectures by experts from academia and industry.
The Orators’ Club, the flagship of the Department of English, acts as a catalyst for intellectual growth, self-expression, and a shared love for the language. The vision of the club is to empower speakers with confidence, eloquence, and influence to drive positive change locally and globally. It hosts a variety of literary-themed activities for students providing opportunities to get an exposure necessary to hone students’ oratory skills and presents a scope to improve their personalities through participation in various competitions.

It strives for excellence in imparting quality education, strengthening the learners’ soft skills; enhancing employability to become principle-centered professionals, living ethical and fulfilling lives with a strong sense of personal accountability and civic responsibility.
MISSION:
The mission of the English Department is to:
- instil an appreciation for and build proficiency in the English language;
- develop and enhance students’ abilities to communicate effectively in spoken and written English ;
- develop students’ ability to read, write, and think critically, analytically and imaginatively through creative group based activities ;
- enhance students’ ability to employ instructional technology to enhance their communication skills;
- develop academic and professional language skills through innovative, creative, student –centered, teaching-learning process;
- offer opportunities to explore identity, values, morals and manners;
- contribute to holistic development of the students by involving them in various activities such as seminars, conferences, role plays, group discussions and power point presentations which develop and showcase their varied talents and abilities.
Dr. Gitasri Mukherjee earned her M.A, M.Phil and Ph.D from University of Hyderabad and is presently working as an Associate Professor and the Coordinator in the Department of English at Muffakham Jah College of Engineering and Technology, Hyderabad. She has been associated with MJCET for the last 13 years. Her journey has been shaped by her dedication, passion, and a relentless pursuit of intellectual curiosity. By encouraging an interactive teaching style she attempts to enhance the learning experience for students and foster a more engaging classroom. She cultivates a growth mindset in students by encouraging them to embrace setbacks as learning opportunities and to persist in the face of challenges and thus facilitates an overall personality development.
Her research interests include innovative strategies in English language teaching, Practical Translation and Gender Studies. She has published more than 20 academic articles in various national and international journals. She also presented papers at various seminars and conferences. She is an accomplished academic and completed several FDPs and participated in various seminars and webinars for continuous upgradation of her professional expertise.
She has been associated with the prestigious NPTEL translation mission. In this journey she translated course contents of Globalization and Culture, Soft Skills for Personality Development and English Language for Competitive Exams. She has successfully cleared 8 NPTEL courses out of which she bagged 4 Gold and 3 Silver certificates and accomplished the other two with distinction.
She has been involved in organizing various guest lectures, workshops, induction programmes in the college. Since her joining she has been actively involved in Orators Club and mentored innumerable students to hone their oratory skills and equip them with necessary life skills as well as soft skills so that they can confidently cope with the challenges of the competitive world and thus emerge as true leaders.
